Let’s take a closer look at each point.
Postsaver® Sleeves protect the bottom of the fence
The bottom of the fence, where the wood hits the dirt, is a prime post rot area. Any damage you can imagine happens down here.
The soil conditions are ripe for ground-line rot, fungi, and moisture damage to occur. It is also where termites can get into the wood and start a family. Once they grow and eat their way out of the posts, it could be too late for the fence.
Fence Armor® Postsaver Sleeves protect the fence post where you need it the most. The bituminous sleeve offers an air and water-tight pocket of fence post protection around the bottom of the fence.
The Postsaver® Sleeves are heat-molded to the bottom of your fence and come in most fence post sizes. You can buy them in singles, packs of ten, or in rolls for larger fence projects. They are very easy to attach and, once in place, protect the bottom of the fence for many years.
Do not forget the fence Post Guards
With your Postsaver® Sleeves in place comes the time for protecting the fence posts from trimmer damage.
If you look at an unprotected fence post, you will see the bottom is chipped and sliced to almost nothing. The damage from trimmers and weed wackers will destroy a fence post in only a few years.
The Fence Armor® Post Guards are the only solution. We designed them to fit easily and quickly to the bottom of the fence posts. The Post Guards are American-made of American galvanized steel. They will not rust or deteriorate and protect the bottom of the fence for many years. A single screw on opposite sides of the fence posts holds them securely in place.
Stain and seal the fence posts too
Many people forget to stain and seal their wood fences regularly.
Depending on the age of your fence, you may need to stain and seal it every couple of years. Wind, rain, cold, and ice, plus intense summer sun, can do a lot of damage to the bottom of the posts. If the coat of stain and seal washes away, then you will need to get to work.
Always purchase factory-treated fence posts that are suitable for burying in the dirt. If you are using Fence Armor® Postsaver Sleeves and Post Guards, always stain and seal the wood before attaching them.
We stock and recommend Stain & Seal Experts products for excellent fence post protection.
Yard maintenance is part of the process
Protecting the bottom of the fence is not just about adding layers of protection. There are other yard maintenance jobs you can do which prevent damage to the posts.
You can stop grass and weeds growing around the bottom of the fence. Dig the soil and put sand, gravel, or mulch down to prevent new growth each season. By doing away with weeds and grass, you will not need to use the trimmer.
Termites can be a big problem in the garden, and they love to eat a new fence posts. Do not give them anywhere to take up home by clearing away any bundles of leaves and branches that you gather in the fall.
Keep the garden and yard clean and tidy, and you will protect the bottom of the fence at the same time.
