Protect Fence Posts from Weed Whacker Damage, Rot & Costly Repairs
Fence posts are the most expensive part of a fence to replace.
Unfortunately, weed whackers, string trimmers, lawn mowers, moisture, and landscape equipment slowly destroy fence posts from the ground up, leading to rot, cracking, exposed wood, and premature fence failure.
The 3” Tall PostGuard™ is ideal for homeowners and properties where grass is maintained at a typical residential height.
For HOA properties, commercial buildings, mailbox posts, landscaper-maintained areas, or locations with taller grass and heavier trimming activity, many customers choose the 6” Tall Pro Series for additional coverage and protection.
Fence Armor® Full PostGuard™ provides durable 360° steel protection designed to absorb everyday landscape abuse while dramatically improving the appearance and longevity of your fence.
Built from 22-gauge American G90 galvanized steel and finished with a resilient polyester powder coating, PostGuard™ is engineered to withstand years of weed trimmer impact, UV exposure, moisture, and outdoor weather.
Description & What Size to Order
Why Fence Armor® PostGuard™ Is Different
Engineered for Real Fence Posts. Not “Perfect” Lumber
One of the biggest frustrations in fencing is that real-world post sizes are rarely perfectly consistent.
Pressure-treated lumber, rough-cut cedar, vinyl-wrapped posts, and regional lumber dimensions often vary significantly from their nominal sizes.
That’s why Fence Armor® PostGuard™ uses a telescoping two-piece design.
Instead of forcing you into an exact measurement, the two interlocking U-channels slide together to accommodate variations in post size and shape.
Example:
A 3½” x 3½” PostGuard™ is designed around the actual post dimension, not the nominal “4x4” lumber label.
Because the two-piece system telescopes inward, it can also accommodate narrower rectangular and irregular post shapes commonly found in fencing, pergolas, mailboxes, agricultural fencing, and outdoor structures.
For rectangular posts, simply measure the longest face of the post and order that corresponding PostGuard™ size.
Example:
A nominal 4x6 post typically measures approximately 5½” x 3½” actual size.
In this case, you would order the 5½” x 5½” PostGuard™. The telescoping design then collapses inward to securely fit the narrower 3½” side dimension.
This flexibility makes Fence Armor® one of the most versatile and contractor-friendly post protection systems available.
Why We Chose Galvanized Steel Instead of Plastic or Aluminum
Fence Armor® was engineered through real-world testing.
We experimented with:
- aluminum
- plastics
- alternative materials
But each had serious drawbacks.
Aluminum:
Too soft for repeated weed whacker and mower impacts.
Plastic:
Over time, UV exposure caused fading, brittleness, and premature wear.
G90 Galvanized Steel:
Delivered the durability we needed.
That’s why Fence Armor® PostGuards are manufactured using:
- 22-gauge American G90 galvanized steel
- premium American polyester powder coating
- rounded impact-deflection edges
The result is a product designed to withstand years of trimming, mowing, landscaping, moisture, and weather exposure.
Built to Deflect Weed Whacker Damage
Fence Armor® PostGuard™ features rounded radius edges designed specifically to help deflect weed trimmer line away from the post.
This:
✔ helps reduce gouging and impact damage
✔ minimizes string breakage and kickback
✔ allows landscapers to trim faster around fences
✔ protects exposed wood and rot barriers
360° Full Protection
The Full PostGuard™ system wraps completely around the post for maximum protection.
Ideal for:
- wood fence posts
- vinyl fence posts
- mailbox posts
- pergolas
- deck supports
- ranch fencing
- agricultural fencing
- HOA fencing
- commercial fencing
Use one side only where grass meets the fence, or install both sides for complete wrap-around protection.
Stackable Fence Protection System
Fence Armor® products are designed to work together as a complete fence protection system.
Pair PostGuard™ with:
- RotGuard™ ground-line rot protection
- CAP CLAW™ universal post caps
- Expert Stain & Seal wood protection
PostGuards stack cleanly and integrate beautifully into long-term fence preservation systems.
Installation
Installing Fence Armor® PostGuard™ is simple.
Installation Steps
- Position the two interlocking halves around the post
- Slide the telescoping sides together for a snug fit
- Fasten using the included color-matched screws
Important Installation Tip
Most lawns are maintained between approximately 2½” and 3” tall. For best protection, install the 3” PostGuard™ approximately 1” to 1½” above ground level.
This places the centerline of typical weed-whacker and trimmer contact directly on the steel guard instead of above it, helping maximize protection and reduce accidental damage to the exposed post.
No special tools required.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Fence Armor® stop weed whacker damage?
Yes. Fence Armor® PostGuard™ is specifically engineered to absorb and deflect repeated weed whacker and string trimmer impacts.
Why does Fence Armor® use galvanized steel instead of plastic?
Galvanized steel offers superior long-term durability against UV exposure, trimmer impacts, moisture, and weather compared to many plastics or softer aluminum materials.
What does “telescoping design” mean?
Fence Armor® uses two interlocking steel channels that slide together, allowing the guard to accommodate variations in actual lumber dimensions and irregular post sizes.
Does a 3½” guard fit a standard 4x4 post?
Yes. Fence Armor® sizes are based on actual post dimensions, not nominal lumber labels. A standard (4x4) post is typically 3½” x 3½” actual size. Always measure your post before you order to be sure.
Can Fence Armor® be installed on existing fences?
Absolutely. Fence Armor® PostGuard™ is designed for both new fence construction and retrofit applications.
Will Fence Armor® work on vinyl fence posts?
Yes. Fence Armor® helps protect vinyl and vinyl-wrapped fence posts from cracking, splitting, weed whacker damage, and lawn equipment impact.
