WHY SEMI-SOLID STAIN? |
✅ Conceals Imperfections, Enhances Character
Semi-solid stains offer more pigment than transparent and semi-transparent options, giving your fence or deck a richer color tone while still showcasing subtle grain and texture. Ideal for blending older, grayed, or mismatched boards.
✅ Deep-Penetrating Oil Formula
Our proprietary formula uses non-drying conditioning oils that penetrate deep into wood fibers, helping prevent cracking, splitting, cupping, and decay from within. The result? Long-lasting protection that doesn’t flake, peel, or form a film. Semi-solid oil stain for cedar fences and decks.
✅ Weather-Ready Defense
Formulated for North American climates, this stain resists UV rays, water intrusion, mold, mildew, and temperature swings. Whether it’s blazing sun, driving rain, or deep snow, EXPERT™ has your fence or deck covered.
✅ Eco-Safe, Family-Safe
With ultra-low VOCs and no harsh solvents, this stain is safe for use around pets, gardens, grills, and your family. Unlike high-VOC stains that can off-gas harmful chemicals for months, EXPERT™ protects your backyard and your peace of mind.
✅ Easy to Apply, Easy to Maintain
No need for sanding or stripping. Just clean and recoat when needed. Brush, roll, or spray, it goes on smoothly with no lap marks or streaks. Perfect for first-time DIYers or seasoned contractors.

Application Tips
Ensure long-lasting beauty and protection by following these expert-approved steps:
✅ Prep Like a Pro
-
Clean the Surface: Remove dirt, mold, mildew, and previous coatings. For best results, use our EXPERT Wood Cleaner & Brightener
-
Perform a Water Test: Sprinkle water on the surface. If it beads up, wait, your wood isn’t ready to absorb stain yet.
-
Sand if Needed: For older or sealed wood, lightly sand to increase absorbency. 40–80 grit is ideal.
✅ Stir Well & Apply Generously
-
Mix Thoroughly: Stir the stain well before and during use to distribute pigments and oils evenly.
-
Apply with Brush, Roller, or Sprayer: For vertical surfaces, a stain brush or pump sprayer is ideal. For decks, use a roller or deck pad. Make sure to wipe any excess stain for better drying results and less transfer.
-
Back-Brush: For best penetration and an even finish, back-brush while the stain is still wet.
-
Avoid Over-Application: Apply only as much as the wood can absorb, no puddling!
✅ One Coat Is Often Enough
-
Especially for vertical surfaces like fences and siding. For horizontal areas like decks or walkways, wipe away excess stain to avoid tracking or tackiness.
✅ Coverage
-
Per Gallon: Covers approximately 150–175 sq. ft., depending on wood texture and porosity.
-
5-Gallon Pail: Covers up to 875 sq. ft. on rough or absorbent surfaces.
- 🛠️ Pro Tip: Coverage may vary based on surface condition, wood species, and application method. Always test on a small area first.

Pro Advice
FAQs: Semi-Solid Stain |
Everything you need to know to get the most from our Semi-Solid Stain & Sealer.
How many coats do I need?
For most projects, one coat of semi-solid stain is sufficient, especially on vertical surfaces or rough wood. For smoother, denser wood or added richness, a second wet-on-wet coat can be applied within 30 minutes of the first. Always avoid over-application or puddling.
Will this stain hide wood imperfections?
Yes. Semi-solid stains are excellent for covering minor imperfections, blotchiness, or discoloration, making them ideal for aged, weathered, or unevenly toned wood.
Can I use it on old fences or decks?
Absolutely! EXPERT™ Semi-Solid Stain is specially formulated to revive and protect older wood, especially on vertical surfaces like fences, pergolas, or siding. Just ensure the surface is clean and dry before staining.
If the wood was previously sealed or painted, sanding or stripping may be required for proper adhesion and penetration.
Important Note for Decks & Horizontal Surfaces:
Darker colors such as Black, Slate Gray, Cape Cod, or Barnwood are not recommended for deck boards or other horizontal surfaces. These high-pigment colors contain so much opacity that they may not fully dry or cure on flat surfaces, leading to tackiness or tracking.
For decking, lighter shades or semi-transparent options offer better results and faster drying performance.
What wood types work best with this stain?
Semi-solid stain is ideal for:
-
Western Red Cedar
-
Treated Pine
-
Douglas Fir
-
Spruce
-
Cypress
-
Aged hardwoods (with prep)
It also works on pressure-treated lumber and log homes with proper surface preparation.
How long will the stain last?
On vertical surfaces like fences or siding, expect up to 5 years of color retention and protection. Horizontal surfaces like decks may require maintenance or reapplication after 2–3 years, depending on climate and traffic.
Does it peel like paint?
No. Unlike film-forming finishes, our oil-based semi-solid stain penetrates deep and fades gradually over time. It won’t peel, flake, or crack, making touch-ups or recoating easy.
What’s the difference between semi-transparent and semi-solid?
Semi-solid stain contains more pigment than semi-transparent stain, giving it better UV resistance and greater color coverage. It still allows some wood grain to show through but offers a more uniform, matte finish.
Is semi-solid stain better than paint for fences or decks?
Semi-solid oil stain penetrates into the wood instead of forming a thick surface film like paint. It won’t peel or trap moisture, making it easier to maintain and better suited for exterior wood structures.
Can I use it with a sprayer or roller?
Yes. For best results, apply using our EXPERT™ brush or a sprayer, then back-brush to even out the coat. Rollers can be used for flat surfaces, but must be followed with brushing to ensure proper penetration.
Is it safe to use around gardens, pets, or people?
Yes! Our formula contains ultra-low VOCs, with no harsh solvent-based additives, making it safer for families, pets, and backyard ecosystems.
