Let’s take a closer look at each point.
Getting the lawn ready for the winter
Many people forget about the lawn for the winter months. Come the fall, they say, ‘I’ll give the lawn one last cut, and that will do it for the rest of the year. Grass doesn’t grow in the winter. Right?’
Wrong. You need to cut the grass one last time, but there are ways and means of doing that properly. Set the mower to around three inches tall before you start. The grass must not be so high that it mats down like a blanket under the winter snow. It must also not be too short that it could die off or leave bare patches come spring.
You should seed the grass once you cut and rake it. It is also a good idea to give it one last soak from the hose so the water can seep down into the roots before the soil freezes.
Applying a good fertilizer will keep the lawn healthy through the winter months.
The fence and fall landscaping and yard maintenance
Do not forget the fence when it comes to fall landscaping and yard maintenance. The winter can be a very tough time for all fences, so prepare the structure for the coming months.
If the fence is looking bare, it may need a coating of a stain and seal. At Fence Armor®, we recommend Stain & Seal Experts products for all the yard maintenance work. Remember to clean the fence before starting the work and get all that summer dust and debris off the wood.
If you haven’t already done so, take the time to apply our Post Guards to the fence. They will protect the foot of the posts from damage all year round. For rural dwellers, our round post protectors can stop the livestock or the local wildlife from cribbing away at the top of the posts.
Fence Armor® post protection will keep the structure safe.
Prune bushes, trees, and fruit plants
Fall landscaping and yard maintenance work is all about preparing the garden for the spring and keeping it safe for the winter.
Once the beautiful trees and plants stop growing, you will need to get out the pruning shears. Do not leave this work until later in the fall, as the winter cold could kill exposed branches. Always remove the growth from around the fence. Winter winds can do a lot of damage, so keep the branches off the posts and rails. Fruit trees and bushes need pruning but ask a garden expert for advice the first time you do the work.
Do not leave the cuttings to rot on the ground. Tidy them into piles for later disposal.
Clean, tidy, gather, and burn
Four words to get your fall landscaping and yard maintenance off to a good start. You will probably also need to do these tasks every weekend for the next few weeks.
All fences and outdoor structures such as a deck, garden furniture, and mailboxes need cleaning. Get a power washer and start washing and clearing away all the dirt from the summer. The Fence Armor® deck accessories section supplies a range of deck cleaners that you may need for stubborn stains.
When the leaves cover the lawn comes the time for gathering. Tidy them up in piles but do not leave them for termites and bugs to find a winter home. Burn or compost the leaves and branches from the pruning to keep the yard clean and tidy.
Keep an eye open during the winter
Fall landscaping and yard maintenance tasks do not stop at the beginning of the winter. During the cold, wet and windy months through to next spring, you need to keep an eye on the yard.
Remove any fallen branches and cut them up for the fire. Keep the drains and gullies free of fallen leaves. Check on the fence that it is not under pressure and do any repairs when you see them.
The garden may be quiet, but you can keep the fall landscaping and yard maintenance going from time to time.
