The Critical Step Most People Skip
After using an alkaline cleaner or wood stripper, the wood’s pH is elevated.
If not neutralized, stain adhesion can fail, leading to:
• Blotchy finish
• Poor penetration
• Premature peeling
• Uneven color
EXPERT Wood Brightener™ restores proper wood pH, brightens the surface, and opens the grain for optimal stain absorption.
This is not optional. It is essential.
What It Does
✔ Restores natural wood color
✔ Neutralizes alkaline cleaners and strippers

✔ Lightens iron and rust stains
✔ Prepares wood for proper stain penetration
Ideal for:
• Cedar decks
• Pressure-treated decks
• Fence restoration

• Pergolas
• Log homes
• Exterior wood surfaces
What It Does NOT Do

FAQs – EXPERT Wood Brightener™ |
What does a wood brightener actually do?
A wood brightener neutralizes the high pH left behind after using an alkaline cleaner or stripper. It restores the wood’s natural color and prepares the surface so stain penetrates evenly and bonds properly.
Do I really need to brighten after cleaning or stripping?
Yes. Skipping this step can lead to blotchy stain, poor adhesion, uneven color, and premature failure. Brightening is not optional in a proper restoration process.
Will this remove black stains from cedar?
Yes. Oxalic acid is highly effective at reducing tannin bleed, which causes black or dark streaking in cedar and redwood.
Can this remove rust or metal stains?
Yes. Wood brightener can lighten or remove iron and rust stains caused by fasteners, metal furniture, or runoff.
Is this the same as a wood cleaner?
No. A cleaner removes dirt, mildew, and coatings. A brightener neutralizes pH and restores color. They perform completely different functions.
Can I use this by itself without cleaning first?
You can use it as a standalone brightener on lightly weathered wood. However, for the best results after restoration work, use it after a cleaner or stripper.
How long should I let it sit?
Typically 5–15 minutes. You should see visible color correction. Do not let it dry on the surface.
How long do I need to wait before staining?
Allow 48–72 hours of dry time. Wood moisture content must be below 13% before staining.
Is this safe for cedar and pressure-treated lumber?
Yes, when used as directed. It is formulated for exterior wood restoration, including cedar, redwood, and pressure-treated lumber.
Is this a stripper?
No. This product does not remove intact paint or stain. It is a neutralizer and brightener only.
Can I use this indoors?
No. This product is designed for exterior wood surfaces only.
