Pro Advice
FAQ
Will this stain peel or flake over time?
No. EXPERT™ is a penetrating oil stain that absorbs into the wood instead of forming a surface film. Maintenance typically requires only cleaning and recoating.
Can I apply EXPERT™ in direct sunlight or cooler temperatures?
Yes. When proper preparation guidelines are followed, EXPERT™ can be applied in sun or shade and across a wider temperature range than many traditional stains.
How many coats should I apply?
One coat is sufficient for most fences and decks. Apply only as much stain as the wood can absorb and avoid puddling.
Can I apply this stain over a previously stained surface?
Yes, EXPERT Stain & Seal can be used over previously stained wood. Just make sure the surface is clean and dry. If the previous stain was a film-forming or acrylic type, sanding or stripping is recommended to ensure proper penetration and bonding.
How do I maintain my deck after staining?
Consider a light recoat every 2–3 years, depending on UV and weather exposure.
What surfaces can a semi-transparent stain be used on?
Ideal for fences, decks, pergolas, siding, railings, log homes, pressure-treated lumber, cedar, and most exterior wood structures.
How long does the semi-transparent stain last?
Expect 3–5 years on vertical surfaces and 2–3 years on decks, depending on climate, sun exposure, and maintenance.
Can I use this stain on both vertical & horizontal surfaces?
Yes. EXPERT™ is designed for both fences and decks, though horizontal surfaces typically require more frequent maintenance.
Is this stain compliant in California and other strict VOC states?
Yes. EXPERT™ Semi-Transparent Oil Stain meets ultra-low VOC requirements and is compliant in all 50 states, including California.
