Postsaver® sleeves are an essential part of any fence protection plan. When constructing a new deck or putting up a fence, post protection is vital. Knowing how to protect the fence posts can save you money and a lot of heartache.
At Fence Armor® we love letting people know how to install Postsaver® sleeves easily. The ground-line is a vital area to protect, and that’s where fence post protector sleeves do their work. When you see how easily they go on the posts and the work they do, you will see what we mean.
To help our customers we put together this short piece about installing Postsaver® sleeves. Our easy-to-follow videos will also show you the steps involved. Fence post protector sleeves do exactly what the name promises, and you will sleep better knowing the fence is safe, both above and below the ground. You should also add cedar deck post sleeves when constructing the deck.
Included on the steps to install Postsaver® easily is:
- Know your post size before purchasing the Postsaver®
- Stain and seal the post before you begin
- Measure and mark the ground-line on the post
- Fit the Postsaver® sleeve onto the post
- You’re good to go
Let’s take a closer look at each point.
Know your post size before purchasing the Postsaver®
When moisture in the dirt gets to work on unprotected posts, you will only get a few short years before rot takes over. Fence post protector sleeves work by creating an airtight, watertight barrier between the fence post and the dirt. The easy to apply sleeves need to fit your posts to work correctly.
It may seem obvious to some, but not everyone knows their fence post size. We offer sleeves for all post sizes and in singles, packs of ten, and rolls.
Measure your posts before purchasing the Postsaver® or cedar deck post sleeves. Better still, order sleeves when ordering your posts, when your agent can tell you the correct size.
Stain and Seal the post before you begin
If you buy from a reputable supplier, your posts will be pressure-treated and sealed before delivery. Even so, it is always a good idea to add another layer before going into the dirt. The posts will be on their own below ground. They will need all the protection you can give them.
We supply Stain & Seal products for long-term post protection. A good coating will help before installing the post protection sleeves.
Adding post sleeves to a cedar deck will add years to the life of the deck.
Measure and mark the ground-line on the post
The ground-line is that area just above the dirt and about six to eight inches below it. It is where the post will come under constant attack from rot, mildew, termites, and trimmers.
Not every post is the same, but you should put about a third below the ground to give the fence a stable footing. The same goes for cedar deck posts when working on the home improvement project.
When you know how far the post will go below ground, you can mark where the sleeve is going. You will see the Postsaver® sleeve has a green band above the black section. The green band is the part that will sit above the ground.
Mark the ground-line level on your post. You will be marking two inches above ground and 12 inches below ground.
Follow the same process with cedar deck post sleeves and ask an expert for full guidance.
Fitting the Postsaver® sleeve to the post
Slide the Postsaver® sleeve into position, using your markings as a guide.
When in place, get your heat gun. Some people use a gas one, while others use an electric gun. Run the heat gun over the fence post protector sleeve. You will see it melt and bind to the post.
Make sure it is fully melted and covering the area in a tight blanket before stopping.
We recommend using a roller, like a painter’s one, to even out any folds or air bubbles for square posts.
You're good to go
When you have post number one done, you can move on to the others.
Full post protection does not finish with the Postsaver® sleeves. You can also add Post Guards to protect against trimmer or mower damage. Cleaning, staining, and sealing will help keep the fence safe. The post sleeves are essential with your cedar deck, but keeping the whole deck well-maintained is an annual job.
With all the Postsaver® sleeves in place, you are good to go.
